If you are not a regular watcher of YouTube Videos, you may wonder why I am bringing up beauty and the mature woman and YouTube, after all isn’t YouTube where you learn to fix your toilet or watch a Ted Talk? Well, ladies, there is also a thriving beauty and fashion community on YouTube, and even a few middle aged “fashionistas” and beauty “gurus” some of whom have very good channels and huge numbers of followers.
YouTube contains an amazing array of interesting topics and talents, but today I am focusing on navigating the beauty sector. I’ve learned loads from a handful of channels, and have had a few disappointments. Here’s what you need to know:
Three Basic Types of Videos:
There are several types of beauty videos out there, the “haul” where someone just shows what they’ve purchased, product reviews, tag videos and tutorials. All can be enlightening and entertaining–depending on the talent and knowledge of the YouTuber.
People seem drawn to “haul” videos, though I’m not sure why. The host simply goes shopping and shows the audience what she bought. Ok, cool. It’s like those “what’s in my purse or backpack” videos—my daughter made one when she was 15 and it’s had over a million views—go figure. Box opening videos are similar—people love watching the opening of beauty subscription boxes. Just curious, apparently. So, if you are settling in with your glass of red, after a hard day’s work, and want to be entertained, then yeah, haul videos.
Next are product reviews, and boy have they become detailed! The host will describe the item being reviewed, wear it under a number of conditions, provide “checkins” throughout the day and give their final thoughts. At least that’s how a good review is done. From a good review, you should know whether the product tested will work with your skin type, dry, oily combination, whether the product comes in a variety of colors, what type of finish the product provides, how well it wears and so on. From there, you can grab a sample from Sephora and try it for yourself. You will have a pretty good shot at something that will work for you—good, trustworthy YouTube reviews can save you time and money.
Tag videos are a good bit of fun. The host answers a series of questions that all participants in the Tag also answer. The viewer can watch a series of Tag videos and see the differences and similarities in the answers. Questions are along the lines of “what is your favorite spring fragrance, what colors do you like best in spring and so on. They are light and fun, and sometimes you can get some ideas of things to try.
Finally, tutorials. The host will show you how, step by step, to apply various makeup items to get best results, or to achieve certain effects. They show what tools they use, how they prepare their skin—the whole scoop. I have learned lots and upped my makeup game considerably from watching YouTube Tutorials. Here’s a fun fashion lookbook and tutorial from my YouTube Channel.
So if you what to try something new, up your beauty game or just be entertained, there is something on YouTube for you. This is part one of a series on YouTube for Mature Women which will be posted on Wednesdays so stay tuned! Do you watch YouTube Videos? If so, who do you love? I’ll be sharing my favorite Beauty Channels soon.
