I am an anticipater. One of those people who likes to look a few steps ahead, to see what’s coming down the pike–or runway; my gaze is often to the distant horizon or up into the clouds. Some have said this is a bad thing…certainly my teachers in grade school didn’t see the value in my fertile imagination, but I’m here to say that somehow, it works for me, somehow I’ve survived and thrived. This trait is especially useful when it comes to my love of fashion and style, I love looking ahead to see what’s coming and deciding which, if any of the trends or color stories I will incorporate in my wardrobe, what captures my imagination, what inspires me.
Some seasons are dry, the color palette or silhouette doesn’t work for me, or the theme doesn’t inspire, while others are so full of inspiration I can’t wait to start playing. As the years have gone by, I have become less a follower, preferring to sing my own song, following trends can seem overwhelming, too time consuming, fussy, or overly costly. At times my focus has been elsewhere, like when I was raising my daughter. I was enjoying spending time with her and needed no no nonsense clothes I could throw on and go–like yoga pants and a tee, at times my wardrobe was prescribed, like when I worked in the corporate world and everything I owned was navy or black.
Sometimes I feel a bit schizophrenic, loving, say boho vibe and sleek business suits at the same time. I like bright colors and classic silhouettes. I like modern and sophisticated. Sometimes my life calls for casual–like now, I spend a lot of time writing and creating content–I’m in jeans most days, while other times, like last summer, I had several contracts that took me into my other life, that of a nonprofit consultant, and I was in sheath dresses and suits.
None the less, each season, I begin combing magazines and fashion blogs to see which trends interest me, and how looks from the runway are beginning to translate into our everyday style. Sometimes I think a look is completely unwearable, and someone pops up in a variation, looking awesome, inspiring me to embrace the look too.
I like to blend my classic pieces with a nod to my favorite trends, rather than jumping on to the bandwagon with both feet, I find my wardrobe lasts a bit longer that way, so I still do some investment buying in the basics, and in my favorite colors when they come in season, then I add in a trendy piece here or there so I can enjoy my favorite new looks and feel like I am a little current!
This season, I’ve been looking at dresses because we have a few minor events coming up. My daughter will be graduating from high school, we are planning a few weekend getaways and a major birthday party for a friend in mid summer.
I’ve been loving coat dresses for their classic style and versatility–you can wear them as a coat or a dress, and I love clothes that do double duty!
I’ve been loving florals, and while I enjoy a good body con dress or top, I also love the billowy soft boho looks as well.
Strappy sundresses have always been a favorite, even though wearing the right bra can be a challenge. This season, wearing a tee or lacy bralette can cover those pesky bra straps. I am still a huge fan, and they will play a big role in my late spring and summer wardrobes.
And finally, the “cold shoulder” and off shoulder dresses and tops have been a favorite of mine for the past couple of seasons, I was an early adopter! Last summer, I bought a beautiful cold shoulder boho dress that I cant wait to wear again this year, and you have already heard enough about the blue dress I featured in a recent video and post.
In any event, I am looking forward to a casual dress haul in the near future and of course, you will be the first to see! Shop my wish list below!
