If I could, I’d head north for the summer. I’d leave the first of June and return in mid October. Up North, I’d sleep with my windows thrown open, enjoying cool nights, and in the morning, I’d walk barefoot through the soft moist grass to pick berries for my breakfast. I’d fill a Mason jar with purple lilacs for my kitchen table and read light summer novels in the afternoon. I’d meet friends for a light dinner alfresco, watching the lightning bugs dance in the dusk. I’d breathe the clear, crisp air deep into my lungs….ahhhh…A girl can dream…
This year, my daughter heads off to college for the six week summer term and will be in and out all summer long. She will be working, and we will be trying to fit in some girl time together before she goes full time to college in the fall. Next year, maybe I can work something more suitable out.
Temperatures, here in Florida are already in the nineties with humidity close behind. It’s the time of year we hide our frizzy hair in ponytails and hats, and seek the lightest, most breathable fabrics to keep us cool. If possible, we avoid the out of doors all together, air conditioners on high, our windows closed tight. The air is heavy and thick with moisture, everything feels sticky hot and slow. I scan my closet for the easiest and coolest thing I can find to throw on.
That’s why I completely and totally love dresses. Floaty maxi dresses, and flirty (almost) mini’s. A dress, a hat and a cute sandal or booties–that’s my uniform for the summer–that’s how I roll.
Many choose shorts and tank tops or tees, but in this heat and humidity, they seem too binding and constricting, too close to the skin. So my shorts spend most of their summer days in the drawer sadly passed over for a cute summer dress or a breezy romper.
A simple dress is finished, one and done. They don’t require layers of accessories nor any explanation. One simply can’t go wrong in a summer dress.
Thank you to J.Jill for sending the two dresses featured in this post.
