Right at the holidays, almost twenty years back, two of my close friends were moving away. I was a new mom, and had very few friends with small children, so having two friends move away right at the holidays, very simply gutted me. I wanted to think of a way we could stay in touch, remember our times together, a way we could continue to touch each other’s lives, and keep our daughters close through the years.
It was that Christmas that one of my friends gave me a friendship ball. The beautiful silver ball opens, and inside, we place small trinkets, a scented candle, delicious chocolates, a meaningful bauble, a thoughtful note or something fun. We take turns sending the ball back and forth and it’s always fun to both give and receive the ball. How I’ve cherished the tradition we’ve shared all these years.I found a pretty one on Amazon here.
This year, J.Jill sent me a Snowflake pendant from their compassion fund program. The necklace features a rustic snowflake on an adjustable leather cord. I thought the necklace would a perfect way to pass the tradition along to Brooke and her best friend. They have both started college and find themselves busy—but want so much to stay in touch. I thought Brooke could start by writing a thoughtful word or two, place it in the locket and give it to her friend who would wear it for the year, then write a new note to Brooke, each year passing the necklace back and forth with a wish or a thought to contemplate for the year.
I’ve talked several times about J.Jill’s Compassion Fund, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this pendant go to woman’s charities. I’ve talked a bit about how important giving, and caring for people in need is to me. But I’ve not shared that, for thirty years, working with charities has been the cornerstone of my career, something I am fiercely passionate about, especially at the Holidays. It is always nice to give a double gift, something for a dear friend you know and something to someone you don’t. Putting good back into the world anonymously just feels good, and lord knows, there have been times I have been so grateful for an unexpected gesture of kindness.
