It happens every year, about this time. It’s not really cool enough to wear fall clothing, heck, it’s not even cool enough to wear jeans-but I am ready to start changing to my fall wardrobe. I love fall fashion, from trendy fall outfits to casual outfits, there is no question, I love the fall season. The trick is how to infuse a bit of fall into your wardrobe before it’s actually fall.
Way back when I was in junior high school, my dad took me back to school shopping. I was so excited about my new outfits that I wore my new wool jacket and matching pants on a hot day in late August to show my best friend. It would have been ok if I had brought a change of clothing, but I didn’t. Oh my was it hot!
I’ve gotten smarter over the years, and I have pictures and a few helpful tips to prove it. Let’s talk about creating a few early fall outfits, shall we? I love fall fashion, and can’t wait to put together some fabulous looks.
1. Color and Pattern
In fall, we move away from bright colors to warmer tones and neutrals, and thus my first tip is to focus on color—specifically fall colors. You can keep your fabrics light weight—just choose a few great fall colors. Think jewel tones, neutrals, and earth tones.
As an example, I am styling my white trousers with a warm bronze silk blouse. Silk and linen are perfect for late summer and early fall so the outfit won’t be too warm. I’ve simply changed the color of my blouse to give my look fall vibes. You can also change patterns from florals to animal print-just keep the fabric light weight.
Changing your color palette for fall can be done by anyone, no matter your body type or personal style. It’s a great way to send early fall vibes without adding heavy fabrics or layers.
2. Wardrobe Update
Fall is the perfect time to update your wardrobe, and retire a few out dated fashion trends —like skinny jeans, ballet flats and pencil skirts. As older women, we often hold on to trends a little longer than we should. Now is the time to change this! I love classic style but will often purchase a few new pieces that allow me to create modern styles.
To update your wardrobe, add high rise jeans, dark denim, and light washed straight leg jeans to your list. An oversized blazer and a white shirt will finish the look. Early on, the blazer can be worn with shorts, and as the weather gets cooler, you can easily switch to jeans or pants.
3. Create a few go-to outfit combinations
I love putting together a few easy outfit combinations—that’s how I create my signature look. I create a few looks I can count on for great style. For example, a beautiful wrap dress pared with a pair of boots and leather jacket.
Or long sleeve blouses in solid colors that can be worn with blue jeans or over a camisole for a great casual look. I love putting outfits together in advance, it makes a huge difference in upping your fashion game.
Another great look for fall is a great blazer and jeans. Whether you go for a classic navy blazer or a wonderful plaid, blazers are really great for fall. Check out this post about styling blazers and jeans for more styling tips.
4. Play with footwear and accessories
I will often switch out my sandals or high heels to boots and booties to create a great fall look. Handbags, hats and scarves are also a great way to change a summer outfit to an early fall outfit. I have a few great handbags in deeper fall tones, perfect to add a little fall spice to my wardrobe.
This season booties are super popular, you can read more about styling boots with this season’s jeans here.
5. Makeup and scent are great ways to add fall vibes to your wardrobe.
Just as we add scented candles to our homes, changing to a fall scent, and adding fall tones to your makeup helps finish the look. Be sure to check out Sharing A Journey on YouTube for more tips on makeup.
While this post is for older women, these tips will be great for women of all ages, and can be put together from the wardrobe essentials you already have on hand. One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to have fun and play with your wardrobe.
Imagine the type of vibe you are going for and pull a few pieces from your closet to see what you can create with what you have. You will be surprised by the outfits you may already have on hand. And, as I’ve said many times before, once you start to play with your wardrobe intros way, you can begin to see what you really need, and purchase key pieces that you will be able to style in many ways.
Yesterday I added booties to my little skirt and tank outfit: was a nice way to bring in fall as it is too hot for anything else! Right now shoes is really the only way to not burn up. Looking forward to real fall. Love the color scheme of your outfit.

I am always excited for Fall, love the colors, the textures and that I can be more creative with layers. I also love the Season and the coolest. Love your suggestions, I do go for prints more than solids, but have camis and some button downs in solids I added last year. Id love to add a few more solid silk blouses! Love your neutral warm look, one of my favorite combinations!
