As much as we love the idea of cozy sweaters, boots, and scarves, the weather doesn’t always cooperate with our fall fashion dreams. If you live in a warm climate or experience an extended summer, you might be wondering how to enjoy fall fashion without overheating. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! Today, I’m sharing my favorite tips for transitioning your wardrobe for fall, even when it feels like summer outside.
This time of year, I am still wearing many of my summer pieces. The hot days will continue into mid-October. I miss fall weather so much but because I live in a warmer climate, I have to make do with adapting my hot weather outfits and summer dresses into fall outfits.
1. Opt for Fall Colors in Lightweight Fabrics
When the weather says summer but your heart says fall, start by transitioning into the season through color. This is my favorite way of incorporating fall into my summer wardrobe: Swap your bright summer hues for classic fall shades like rust, mustard, olive, and plum. By wearing these deeper tones in lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or even a light silk, you’ll still feel cool while looking autumn-appropriate.
A great example of this is wearing a breezy linen top in burnt orange paired with white cropped trousers. You’ll get that fall vibe without having to bundle up in heavy knits. It’s all about balance!
2. Layer Lightly
Fall is known for layering, but when the temperatures are still high, it’s important to choose light layers that you can peel off if needed. Think about layering sleeveless or short-sleeved tops with lightweight cardigans or a kimono-style jacket. These pieces give you the versatility to create a fall-inspired look that you can adjust throughout the day.
A long duster or open-front cardigan in a thin fabric adds that signature fall coziness without trapping heat. You could also layer a tank top under a chambray shirt or button-down blouse, leaving it open for a relaxed, stylish look.
3. Accessorize Sun Dresses with Boots and Light Jackets
One of my favorite ways to transition into fall is by taking a classic sundress and adding a few fall-inspired accessories. Pairing a light, flowy dress with ankle boots or even knee-high boots immediately gives you that autumn look while still keeping cool. Add a cropped leather or denim jacket for a polished, fall-ready style that doesn’t feel bulky.
This approach works great with those airy dresses you’ve been wearing all summer. Just swap out your sandals for a chic pair of boots and toss on a light jacket—you’ll feel seasonally appropriate without the extra warmth.
4. Incorporate Fall Prints and Patterns
Nothing says fall quite like plaid, houndstooth, or floral prints in warm tones. Instead of going for heavy woolen pieces, look for these patterns in lightweight materials. A plaid skirt or scarf can instantly add an autumnal flair to your outfit without making you sweat. The key is sticking to breathable fabrics and choosing patterns that scream fall.
One of my go-tos is a plaid wrap skirt paired with a simple tee or a printed scarf thrown over a sleeveless dress. It’s the perfect way to get into the fall spirit without overcommitting to the season’s heavier pieces. It gives the vibe of sweater weather without the bulk and warmth of most fall pieces.
5. Choose Open-Toe or Cut-Out Footwear
Leather boots are the ultimate fall footwear are a great way to transition your wardrobe for fall, but when it’s too hot for full coverage, go for ankle booties with cutouts or even open-toe options. They’ll give you that fall feel without trapping in too much heat. Alternatively, loafers and mules in fall tones like cognac or deep red can be a great compromise for warm weather.
Pair your fall outfit with a stylish mule or ankle bootie that lets your feet breathe. It’s the easiest way to add that autumn touch to your wardrobe without overheating. At the end of the day, over the knee boots just won’t cut it in the extreme heat.
6. Accessorize with Fall Textures
When it’s too hot for heavy layers, accessories are your best friend. Reach for textured accessories like suede handbags, felt hats, or leather belts to add dimension to your look. These small touches will give your outfit that fall-inspired touch without adding warmth.
A wide-brim hat in a rich, neutral shade can immediately elevate your look while providing sun protection. Pair it with a leather or faux leather bag, and you’ll be on-trend for fall.
7. Add Fall-Inspired Fragrances
Scents play a huge role in setting the mood for the season, and fall is the perfect time to transition from light florals to spicier, woodier, and richer fragrances. Think of scents with notes of amber, vanilla, cedar, and spices like cinnamon and cardamom. These warm, comforting fragrances can make you feel fall-ready even in the heat.
Here are a few fall-appropriate fragrances I recommend:
– Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille: A luxurious blend of warm vanilla, tobacco, and spicy notes that’s perfect for fall.
– Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka: This scent is rich and creamy with notes of myrrh, tonka bean, and almond, giving it a deeply comforting feel.
– Byredo Gypsy Water: With its combination of pine needles, sandalwood, and amber, this fragrance evokes the earthy, woody elements of fall.
– Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood: A sophisticated, opulent blend of oud, rose, and vanilla that feels both rich and spicy for fall.
Swapping out your perfume for a richer, moodier fragrance is a simple way to transition into fall, even when the temperatures are still high.
8. Swap Sandals for Loafers or Mules
While sandals might still feel like the right option in the heat, switching to closed-toe shoes like loafers or mules in rich colors can transition your outfit into fall. It’s a subtle yet effective way to make the shift while keeping your look seasonally appropriate. Think deep browns, burgundy, or classic black.
Here are a few fall outfit ideas for days when warmer weather takes over:
Pair linen pants or tailored shorts with a short-sleeved t-shirt or tank and linen blazer.
Wear a midi dress with a lightweight cardigan in a fall color.
Pair a knit tank top with a pair of linen shorts in a dark color–think rich browns or navy.
Try a beautiful slip dress with a leather jacket over your shoulders–ideal for days when you are in and out of air conditioning.
This makes a great outfit combo for warm fall weather while still being comfortable on a humid day.
Bonus Tip: Create a Fall Atmosphere!
One of my favorite ways to embrace fall even when it’s warm is by creating a fall ambiance at home. Light a pumpkin-scented candle, make a batch of your favorite pumpkin spice latte and sprinkle a few autumnal decorations around your living space. You’ll be in the fall mood in no time!
No matter where you live, you can still enjoy fall fashion! By incorporating these tips, you’ll stay cool and stylish as we head into the new season.
