With September all but over, my thoughts go to fall’s vivid colors, a crispness to the air and more formal, layered dressing. With business meetings scheduled, and a color tour planned, I decided to pull together a mini capsule wardrobe of versatile looks that seamlessly transition from work to travel to casual.
Choose a Color Palette for your Capsule Wardrobe
As with all capsule wardrobes, settling on a color palette is job one. For these looks, I went with camel, black and blue. Blue may seem an odd choice, but pared with camel, it is modern and fresh, and flattering with most skin tones.
Choose Pants and or Skirts for your Capsule Wardrobe
Next, I pulled three pairs of pants. Jeans are always tops on my list as I often wear them for causal business meetings, they are great for travel and of course casual weekend looks. Next, I chose a pair of J.Jill’s black pleated crops, super versatile and great for business casual as well as a relaxed weekend, it’s just a matter of shifting your top, jacket and shoes. And finally, a dressy pair of black pants for a more formal look. (I considered a black pencil skirt which would have been great as well.)
Choose Tops for your Capsule Wardrobe
For tops, I pulled a camel colored long sleeved t-shirt, great on it’s own with jeans and a great layering piece. I also pulled a blue button down shirt, again a great layering piece, a black cashmere turtleneck and finally, J.Jill’s windowpane peplum top in black. I really loved the peplum detail in the back. The top looks great with jeans, dress pants and is perfect for layering. Instead of a jean jacket or bomber, I chose J.Jill’s Hayley textured topper. I totally love the silhouette and versatility of the piece. My imagination ran wild when I saw it!
Accessories Make the Outfit
This season, scarves are quite a comeback, and are a great way to change up an outfit, so I grabbed a black and gold oblong scarf from my collection, a vintage 1970’s hat, which perfectly matched the Hayley topper and I went for some pearls as well. As always, my gold bracelets and hoop earrings make their way into the mix—I can’t imagine an out fit with out my signature jewelry!
Everyone Loves Shoes and Bags
From heels to flats, nothing changes the look of an outfit more than shoes. I am having lots of fun with shoes this season. In particular, I am loving embroidered slides, simple black stilettos, and black and camel slides with a cool pearl detail. Ladylike handbags are always a favorite; I love structured bags, chain detail as well as textured bags. The bags shown are from my collection.
I love the concept of capsule wardrobe, especially for travel. I suppose, one could say I’ve always used a variation of capsule dressing, finding high quality classic pieces and combining them with the trends to keep my wardrobe fresh and current.
Oh my, Nina! I love, love, love all of it! I want every piece you have showcased here…I want it all in my closet! Superb!

These are great tips for packing for a trip in general! I always go with neutrals but pick one accent color, and make sure everything can be worn together. It makes getting dressed so much easier!
