Choosing the Perfect Wedding Gown for the Over-50 Bride

01/31/2024 · In: Over 50 Fashion

With this year’s Silver Bachelor shining light on the romantic lives of couples over 50, the show reminds us that it’s never too late to live your best life, find the perfect partner, and have the wedding of your dreams.  In this post, we discuss how older brides can select the perfect wedding gown to celebrate this special occasion.

Gone are the days when a mature bride is expected to wear long sleeves and high necklines.  Older women can choose from a variety of bridal gowns, including traditional white gowns to hula skirts.  The best news is that there is no dress code for a second marriage, and it is up to you to choose what you feel is the perfect wedding dress.

You may choose to wear something very different for your second wedding or if it is your first wedding, you may choose one of the white floor-length dresses that have you swirling around the dance floor.  Today’s mature women have a variety of choices.

How to choose the right dress

Choosing the right wedding gown is paramount as it not only accentuates your best features but also reflects your style and confidence. With next to no rules on the table, it may seem daunting.  But the perfect dress is a harmonious blend of comfort and style that complements the theme of the occasion and makes you feel beautiful and self-assured. For the over-50 bride, finding the right gown is an opportunity to express your elegance and maturity, and to make a statement about your individuality and the journey you’ve embarked on. A well-chosen gown can enhance the joy and significance of the occasion, making it an unforgettable experience.

2. Choosing the Dress Based on Your Wedding Type

When planning your wedding, the type of ceremony you have in mind plays a pivotal role in influencing the choice of your gown. For a traditional ceremony in a chapel or a grand hall, you might opt for an elegant and classic gown, perhaps with a sweetheart neckline, a touch of lace, or delicate beadwork that denotes sophistication and grace.

If you’re planning an intimate beach wedding, a lightweight, flowing dress in soft fabrics like chiffon or silk would be more appropriate, allowing ease of movement and comfort. For a garden or outdoor wedding, a simple, airy dress made of lace or tulle would complement the natural surroundings beautifully. Remember, the style of your wedding gown should echo the ambiance and setting of your wedding, enhancing the overall thematic harmony of the occasion.

Appealing Wedding Themes for the Over-50 Bride

A wedding theme sets the tone for the entire event and should reflect the personal style and preferences of the bride. Having a theme is a great way to create a focus for the wedding. For the over-50 bride, consider themes that embody elegance, sophistication, and timelessness. A theme also helps attendees choose the right wedding guest outfits, which is very helpful to all involved.

  1. Vintage: A vintage theme allows you to incorporate elements from a past era, embodying nostalgia and class. This could be the roaring 20s, the elegant 50s or the vibrant 70s. Antique lace gowns, heirloom jewelry, and classic cars can enhance the vintage vibe. You may choose a lovely tea-length dress with a boat neck for this theme.
  2. Rustic: A rustic wedding theme is characterized by natural elements such as wood, burlap, and lace, making it perfect for outdoor or barn weddings. This theme is ideal for brides who appreciate the simplicity and the charm of the countryside.  This theme is great for a fall wedding, and dresses with lovely empire waists.
  3. Garden Party: Nothing says elegance like an English garden party. With an abundance of flowers, delicate tea sets, and lace runners, this theme is both sophisticated and relaxed. The bride might opt for a simple floral lace gown to complement the surroundings. Garden party-style weddings are perfect for spring and summer weddings, and a formal dress is the perfect match for a bridal look.
  4. Elegant City Soiree: For those who prefer an urban setting, an elegant city soiree is ideal. This theme is all about sophistication and glamour. Think rooftop venues, sparkly gowns, and refined décor. This allows for a lovely chic outfit with a simple silhouette.
  5. Romantic Beach: A beach wedding provides a relaxed, intimate setting. Opt for a lightweight, flowing dress, and bare feet, and incorporate seashells and starfish into your décor for a truly romantic seaside celebration.

Considering Your Personal Style and Body Shape

Your personal style and body shape are equally important factors to contemplate in your quest for the perfect wedding gown. Each bride has a unique style that defines her, whether it’s classic, romantic, bohemian, or modern. Your wedding gown should be an extension of this style, allowing your personality to shine through. For your body shape, it’s key to find a gown that highlights your assets and downplays any perceived flaws.

For instance, A-line dresses are universally flattering, while mermaid gowns enhance an hourglass figure. Empire waist gowns are perfect for petite brides, while ball gowns can add curves to a lean frame. Utilize a professional bridal consultant’s expertise in identifying the best gown styles for your body shape to ensure that you not only look stunning but also feel comfortable and confident in your dress on your big day.

Tips for Shopping as an Older Bride

When shopping for your wedding gown as an older bride, always remember that age is just a number, and your choice should primarily be about what makes you feel the most beautiful and confident. Don’t limit yourself to traditional bridal shops; consider boutiques and online stores specializing in dresses for mature brides, they often offer a wider range of styles and sizes.

Don’t shy away from color; adding a touch of color to your gown can make it stand out and reflect your personality. You might want to consider a dress with sleeves, or a stylish shawl or jacket, especially if the wedding is in a cooler month, or in a venue where you would feel more comfortable with a little extra coverage. Above all, take your time to shop around, try on different styles, and bring along a trusted friend or family member who knows your style and can give you honest feedback. Remember, this is your special day, and you should feel nothing less than fabulous.

Choosing the Right Silhouette, Length, Sleeve Length, and Neckline for Mature Brides

Choosing the right silhouette, length, sleeve length, and neckline for your wedding gown can accentuate your stunning features while ensuring you feel comfortable and confident. As a mature bride, several options can suit your style and body type:

Silhouette: A-line and empire gowns are universally flattering and can be perfect for older brides. They provide a balanced look by defining your waist and flowing gently to the ground, which suits most body types. Sheath dresses are also a great option if you have a slender frame as they create a sleek, minimalist look.

Length: The length of your gown should match the formality and location of your wedding. Full-length gowns are ideal for more formal weddings and can make a dramatic statement. For a casual or outdoor wedding, tea-length dresses (that fall below the knee and above the ankle) or cocktail-length dresses (that end at or above the knee) are both stylish options that can offer more freedom of movement.

Sleeve Length: Sleeve lengths can vary from sleeveless to full-length depending on your comfort and the weather. Cap sleeves and short sleeves are timeless choices while three-quarter and full-length sleeves can provide more coverage and sophistication. For a modern twist, consider illusion sleeves made from lace or tulle.

Neckline: The right neckline can enhance your facial features and frame your upper body. Sweetheart and V-necklines are classic choices that suit most body shapes. For a modest yet elegant look, consider a bateau (boat) neckline that horizontally runs across the collarbone. For added glamour, a scoop or square neckline can be stunning, especially when paired with a statement necklace or earrings.

Remember, the key is to choose a wedding gown that reflects your style, flatters your body shape, and makes you feel sensational. A professional bridal consultant can guide you through the process, offering advice tailored to your specific needs and desires.

  • Discuss the various gown options and styles that are appropriate for the wedding type
  • Include images of different gown options for each wedding type to provide visual inspiration

Special Considerations

It’s essential to remember that your wedding day is about celebrating the love between you and your partner, and your choices, including your dress, should reflect your personal style and happiness. In a world that often tries to dictate what is ‘appropriate’ or ‘expected,’ it can be challenging to navigate the judgments of others, especially as an older bride. However, it’s your unique journey, your unique story, and ultimately, your unique celebration.

Embrace your age, your beauty, and your wisdom. The choice of your wedding dress should be a testament to your individuality, and it’s your satisfaction and comfort that matters the most. Anyone who truly cares for you will respect your choices and cheer for your happiness. After all, true elegance and style are ageless, and your wedding day is the perfect occasion to showcase that.

Color and Accessory Choices for Older Brides

Tradition suggests that brides should wear white to symbolize purity and innocence. However, this is no longer strictly adhered to in contemporary wedding fashion. Brides of all ages are opting for colors that suit their skin tone, personality, and the theme of the wedding. Older brides may choose to wear white, off-white, cream, or ivory if they wish, or they may select a different color altogether. Blush, silver, champagne, or even bold colors like deep blue or burgundy can be stunning and perfectly suitable choices. Remember, your wedding dress should reflect your style and make you feel beautiful and comfortable.

When it comes to wearing a veil, there is no set rule either. Some older brides choose to forgo a veil, considering it a symbol of first-time brides, while others choose to wear one because they love the tradition it represents. There are alternatives to a traditional veil, such as fascinators, hair vines, tiaras, or beautiful hair accessories that can add a touch of elegance to your look.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to wear a veil or not is a personal one. You should choose what feels right for you and aligns with the overall style of your wedding attire. Your comfort and satisfaction should be the guiding principles in making this decision.

Every bride deserves to radiate confidence, joy, and beauty on her wedding day. Age is nothing but a number and should never dictate your choices or diminish your shine on such a special occasion. Whether you are a first-time bride or celebrating a renewal of vows, remember that this day is about the love that you and your partner share.

Choose a wedding gown that mirrors your style, flatters your body, and most importantly, makes you feel special and comfortable. Seek advice when needed, but let your heart lead the way. After all, elegance is truly ageless and your wedding day is the ideal moment to embrace your unique beauty and charm. Remember, your choices are a reflection of your personality and your commitment to your partner. Embrace the freedom of choice and let your wedding day be the embodiment of your love story. I've been making a point to spend a lot less time I've been making a point to spend a lot less time on screens this year. It's been amazing how much free time I have to enjoy new hobbies and spending time with friends and family. I even tried my hand at painting with a Time For Art kit and actually made this sweet dolphin painting. I was surprised how easy it was even for someone like me who has very little painting experience. I loved how the kits came with everything I needed to make the painting, and I when I needed help, I watched a video on the Time for Art website. I thought it would be fun to host some friends for a girls painting night, invitations are in the mail--plus it would make a perfect gift. Be sure to check out @timeforartlive--I will link all their info in my link tree.
