I live in active workout wear — not ‘athleisure’, but real full on workout wear—the stuff you wear to really train, not look super cute. Frankly, day in and day out it can be boring. And, I may lose a few of you here, but I like to look polished, at least somewhat, especially if I’m going to go from the gym or ice skating rink to grab a bite to eat or run a few errands. I’ve challenged myself to put together some gym to street outfits that will take me from a heavy training session into the real world looking pulled together and polished.
How to Wear Workout Clothes in Public: Easy Gym to Street Outfits
While I’ve been guilty of wearing active or workout wear to run errands from time to time, I’ve also chosen to go through a drive through instead of going to a restaurant because I didn’t feel adequately covered and didn’t want to go to a restaurant in strait up workout wear. I’m also completely over the giant tank top over sweaty gym wear (but I get it) so I’ve created options that require a few easy pieces you can tuck into your gym bag with ease so when you come out, you have completely shifted gears.

For all three looks, you will note I exchanged my sports top with a simple tunic style tank top. This one is from Target, so it’s super affordable. I’m wearing a pair of comfortable leggings, a gift from J.Jill; I wear leggings like this when I work out. To this simple base, I added a jean jacket, necklace and I switched out my trainers for a pair of comfy glittery slip ons. Aviator sunnies finish off the look for an easy sporty vibe.

For the second look, I added a pair of jazzy booties—I got these over the winter and they’ve been comfortable and a fun way to give a basic look a boost. These were quite affordable, I got them from www.shein.com. I added a black sleeveless duster, a long necklace and a pair of cat eye sunnies, for an easy polished look.
How to Wear Workout Clothes in Public: Look #3
For the last look, I added a beautiful kimono and a pair of heels for a super chic look. I love this kimono, which was a mega trend last summer. It is a trend still being embraced into spring/summer 2018. If you’re a little skeptical of adding a kimono, remember, if you don’t want to wear it out, you can always enjoy it at home, but they are a wonderful way to add a pop to an otherwise basic outfit. They look great with jeans and casual slacks, so if you haven’t tried it, you should.
In all three cases, you will note that I changed just the shoes, and topper—added a simple necklace and sunglasses and that’s all it took to take athletic wear from the gym to the street.

Such cute active wear looks!
Nina, you have nailed all three looks perfectly! And I love the second look with a sleeveless tank and vest and booties. I was just pondering today about wearing booties into warmer weather because I have so many cute ones and I don’t want to retire them completely for Spring and Summer. And now I see that I don’t have to retire them if I style them like you have! Thanks for the amazing inspiration!

I love that kimono and the outfit with the black top and leggings with heels is perfect. As is the jean jacket.
All such great ideas Nina! I had taken a little break from the gym, but I’m back on it now so I’ll definitely have to try these! Have a great weekend!
I also add a kimono or a baggy sweater in winter….guilty of living in active wear too….
Wonderful looks, and the kimono is truly lovely! I live near Melbourne, on the central East coast – yes, let’s try to find each other! xo

It’s seriously so easy to be comfy AND polished nowadays with nice black leggings and the right accessories. My favorite of your looks is the one with the floral kimono! Gorgeous!

This is such a great post idea! It’s great to cut down on the excuses to exercise – remove the “but I’d have to change!” I just might go back and add a link you this page from my post about reminders to exercise 🙂 http://www.doctorstrivetothrive.com/ten-exercise-reminders-to-get-you-moving/
