How to Wear the Best Summer Maxi Dresses for Women Over 50

As older women, our changing bodies and styles can often feel like a challenge to dress for. However, one fashion piece that is classic and timeless for you to rock in your 50s is the maxi dress. Maxi dresses are versatile, comfortable, and elegant pieces that can enhance and complement your style at any age. In this blog post, we will give you tips on how to wear maxi dresses in your 50s and beyond, and how to pick the perfect one to flaunt your features and personality.

As mature women interested in fashion, we know our personal style is always evolving, and dresses are a great way to express our style whether we love a classic look, or love vintage or boho looks, dresses are a good choice for the mature woman, and look great on any body type.  You needn’t wear dresses just for special occasions, dresses are a great option for a casual look and are wonderful in warmer weather.  I have found that the maxi dress is a wardrobe staple, depending on the style of the dress.  I love them for a summer wedding, casual wear, and even to cover a bathing suit.

How to choose the right maxi dress:

When selecting the perfect maxi dress, choose one that fits in with the occasion you are attending, whether it’s a casual weekend brunch with friends or a formal evening event. Go for flattering cuts such as V-neck, a wrap dress, or one with an empire waist that accentuates your curves and adds more height. The length should never drag on the floor, as it may make you look shorter. It is essential to also select a well-fitted maxi dress that cinches and flares at the right points of your body.  Older women are often concerned about their arms, and avoid summer dresses because they don’t have long sleeves. However, by adding a button-down shirt,  your arms are covered and it’s a great look.

One of my all-time favorite styles is wrap dresses–they enhance almost any body shape and look great in solid colors, bold bright colors, fun prints, and florals.  Choosing a dress with a smocked bodice is also a good idea; it enhances the bustline and creates a small waist, especially for those with flowy skirts.  Don’t be afraid of cap sleeves or flutter sleeves, so long as they aren’t too exaggerated–and remember, you can always add a crisp white shirt to cover sleeves you don’t like.  A floral maxi dress is one of my favorites, especially during the summer months–I love them with flat sandals in the summer and often pair them with boots and a leather jacket when the weather cools.

How to Style a Maxi Dress:

Wearing a maxi dress doesn’t mean you cannot layer or accessories it. Use oversized belts or statement necklaces to add a pop of style and color, but don’t go overboard. Pair your look with a chic blazer or denim jacket, and you will create more dimension to your whole outfit. For cooler seasons, add knee-high boots and a cute scarf are a great choice to keep you warm.

Which Colors and Prints to Choose from:

Maxi dresses come in various colors and prints to match your style and mood. Choose hues that complement your skin, such as jewel tones, muted earth tones, or pastels. Avoid bright, flashy colors that may look too overwhelming. Prints are also an excellent way of showing off your personality, whether you want to go for bold stripes, paisley, florals, or solids – it is your choice.  The older woman is often reticent to wear color and print, but in my opinion, good style isn’t just for younger women.  Choose the style of dress, color, and floral print that makes you feel amazing, and don’t worry about fashion trends.

Which Fabric to Choose for A Spring or Summer Maxi Dress:

Maxi dresses come in different fabrics, from lightweight cotton, silk, and linen to heavier brocade and taffeta. Choose fabrics that match the occasion and weather. A lighter fabric is perfect for hot summer days while you can opt for heavier fabrics for colder weather events. You can also experiment with different textures to add depth to your max dress style.

Gaining Confidence in Your Style Choices:

Finally, for you to rock maxi dresses in your 50s, you must exude confidence. Find a maxi dress that reflects your personality and style. If you’re comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing, you will look stunning and effortless. Accessorize with the right heels or flats to complete your look and add some spring to your step, and you will be unstoppable.

Maxi dresses are an excellent fashion piece that women of all ages can enjoy. With the right tips and styles, women over 50 can rock maxi dresses and feel comfortable, fabulous, and confident while flaunting their style, personality, and curves. Remember, there is no defined age to wear maxi dresses. It’s all about finding the right fit, style, and confidence to look and feel your best. Go forth and rock that maxi dress, and enjoy your fashion style in your 50s!

I've been making a point to spend a lot less time I've been making a point to spend a lot less time on screens this year. It's been amazing how much free time I have to enjoy new hobbies and spending time with friends and family. I even tried my hand at painting with a Time For Art kit and actually made this sweet dolphin painting. I was surprised how easy it was even for someone like me who has very little painting experience. I loved how the kits came with everything I needed to make the painting, and I when I needed help, I watched a video on the Time for Art website. I thought it would be fun to host some friends for a girls painting night, invitations are in the mail--plus it would make a perfect gift. Be sure to check out @timeforartlive--I will link all their info in my link tree.
