In recent years, we have embraced faux leather, and now faux suede. Faux suede has been around for a long time—it used to be called Ultra Suede, back in the day. Seamstresses loved it, and good ultra suede was a wonder to behold. But like so many good things, ultra suede fell to the back of the class as quality wained and the fabric was over saturated in the market. You know how it goes.
Well friends, it’s back only now we call it faux suede.
Faux leather and suede are much lighter weight, and more flexible than their real counterparts—neither leather nor suede gives much, and thus can be really restricting when made as a skirt or pants. Plus, the fabrics are very warm—which is a great thing in some climates, but here in Florida, the real real leather and suede would be worn mainly in footwear and handbags, it’s just too hot here! Faux leather and suede, on the other hand, are very comfortable and as technology has improved, so too has the fit and look of these products.
Like it’s cousin faux leather, faux suede is a synthetic fabric which comes in many grades, so be sure to check for thickness so you get a luxe feel, and if you are purchasing leggings and pants, be sure to do the panty line, bend and squat checks to make sure your garment fits properly.
This season’s faux suede is mainly seen in pants and leggings—a welcome change to just plain black—like the ones I wear—or jeggings—which are making their way out of the lime light, though a recent trip to the mall might say otherwise. In any event, I was ready for a change from jeans and leggings, and am looking forward to adding some new texture and style to my wardrobe.
Three years ago, a Stylish Monday sister, Suzanne Bell of www.asksuzannebell.com suggested I give Spanx faux leather leggings a try because she loved hers so much. It was she who got me hooked on Spanx, and now I have a nice collection of Spanx pants. You can read more about the various styles of Spanx here. I wear Spanx almost daily—they wash and wear very well, and the pants look great because they hold you in in all the right places.
Moving back over to the subject at hand, it should come as no surprise that I added Spanx faux suede flairs to my closet, and am eyeing up the faux suede leggings—heck, I might as well, right?
One of the things I am loving about the influx of faux suede is the addition of more color to my wardrobe—not just black and denim, but rich browns, beiges, navy and greens. Building new capsules around chocolate brown or emerald green is a welcomed bit of variety to my winter wardrobe— and will be especially fun as we near the holidays.
In today’s post, I am featuring my new brown faux suede flairs—another style shift I am welcoming this season. I love a good flair—and these pants come in both faux suede and faux leather. I bought both, but decided to keep the faux suede since I already had faux leather in my closet.
There is really no secret sauce to styling faux suede, just find a color and style you love, and you will find many pieces in your wardrobe that will go nicely. When it comes to foot wear, I like to either match suede with suede or add a smooth leather to the mix just for added texture. Either works beautifully. This is something we can have fun with—so my friends, enjoy playing with faux leather and faux suede.

Julie – Fashion Trends and Friends and Instagram FashionTandF – It’s Faux Leather Weather; and I’m not mad about it! I actually did a whole blog post already on this trend but this faux leather lover can’t get enough so of course I had to participate with all of my fashionable friends. This faux leather jumper is one of my newest additions. Plus I’m sharing a fabulous new faux leather and suede pink jacket to my wardrobe! The Faux Leather Trend is going strong and the best part is you can find an assortment of colors!
Nancy – Nancy’s Fashion Style – I love to wear faux leather. Back in the days I used to wear a lot of real leather, it’s not my thing anymore. The only downside with faux leather is that we have a white leather couch, that doesn’t work very well together. So sadly I can only wear faux leather when I go out!
Nicole – High Latitude Style – I found these pink faux leather booties at Value Village two years ago. Of course, the color and zipper details called my name. Despite they got a lot of wear in the long Interior Alaska winters, they still look like new.
Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – I always love the edginess that leather can add to any outfit. I recently spotted these wide legged faux leather trousers in Charlotte Russe for a mere $15. I liked them so much that I also bought them in black and now I have all sorts of sassy styling ideas rolling through my mind.
Lucy – Lucy Bertoldi.com I adore faux-leather and all the styling possibilities that go along with it! Today’s outfit is a perfect example of how you can mix colors to obtain a look that flows, just by having the fabric as the element that pulls it all together. Faux-leather is master at accomplishing this- even with colors that you wouldn’t necessarily think of styling together!
Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits – I love to change the look of a dress with a lightweight jacket like this faux suede one from Stitch Fix.
Ada – Elegance and Mommyhood
Faux Leather has been trending for the past decade – as long as I have been a mother pretty much. And speaking of mothers, my layered look today is very cool and put together for a busy mom with little ones, that’s me. The star of the show is this Pinot Noir Faux Leather Moto Jacket with a built-in grey sweatshirt hoodie. How cool is that?! More faux leather comes via the chic shoes that can pass both as sneakers and as oxfords. Both of these leather pieces are 2 of the 5 items I purchased this Summer during the NSale.
Joy – Joyous Styling Faux Leather Shacket

Wow, faux suede leggings! That is so much more comfortable then faux leather I assume!
I love the faux suede flares and are the leggings with the camel sweater a faux leather and are they chocolate brown? Both are gorgeous. I have not tried the faux suede yet, but love the look. I finally bought the Spanx faux leather leggings and do love them.
Have a great week Nina!
