You know, I don’t think of myself as a fashion rule breaker. I wear what I like. I take the time to figure out whether I fancy a given style, and whether I think it suits me. If it does, I wear it. If it doesn’t, I don’t. A few years ago, out of the blue came that article that circulated, “50 Things You Should Never Wear After 50”. The list included high heels, short skirts, swim wear, tight pants, showing cleavage…the list went on and on. A few months ago someone wrote an article stating that women over 50 should not wear jeans. To say women in my tribe were incensed was an understatement. One of my friends made a video with 100 stylish women over the age of 50 wearing jeans, some upwards of 70 in age all looking amazing!
Here’s a round up of some of my infractions, I tried out a $10 tube top, which, by the way was also a crop top. I figured that if I felt uncomfortable in it, I could always give it to my daughter. I liked it styled with my Tahari skirt. I’ve also worn a couple of rompers; the one above is really versatile, I wore it with the tube top, and as a swim suit cover up. And finally, my recent denim skirt and graphic T; look broke several rules, the high platforms, short skirt, and the fact that I’d owned denim skirts before, when I was twenty. There’s a new new trend in town: Style Over Age. The way I see it, if the style suits you, wear it. AT ANY AGE. Have a little fun, live a little. My friends and I are, and we’ve got photos to prove it! Here are my fellow Rule Breakers. or, Ladies who chose Great Style Over Age.
Eugenia from www.theageofgrace.com
First Up: Eugenia from www.theageofgrace.com. Eugenia is rocking the pattern on pattern trend. Oh and check out the red cat eye sunnies! Trends in general were always considered the domain of the young. Not any more. Eugenia’s style is a blend of trendy and elegant, which I love. I hope you’ll stop by Eugenia’s page and check out this most elegant rule breaker.
Lori and Julie from www.fashiontrendsandfriends.com
The Girls from Fashion Trends and Friends wore SHORTS. Oh yes they did! Both Lori and Julie are over 50 and they’ve still got it going on. As I’ve said before when I’ve featured them, they are so much fun, and I love that they are always trying new things. If you don’t follow Fashion Trends and Friends, you have to!
Robin from www.helloIm50ish.com
Next up, we have Robin, who today is asking whether we can still wear a two piece. I’ve not worn one in public since Brooke was born, but that’s just me! You’ll have to stop by Robin’s (www.helloim50ish.com) page to see what her conclusion is.
Hilda from www.overthehilda.com
And last, our lovely Hilda who made the decision take the risk and wear a bikini to celebrate her 60th. She rocked it. She and her husband took a lovely trip to celebrate. We’ve featured Hilda and GG before; but if you haven’t stopped by to check out Hilda’s blog, you’ve got to see what they are up to. They travel, take care of their grans, and Hilda enjoys fashion and shopping as much as I do.
This is just a small round up of “Rule Breakers” in the 50 plus community, or should I say women who have chosen Style Over Age. Be sure to check out their blogs to see how they’ve incorporated the Style Over Age trend. I plan to run this theme again in the future, so if you have a Style Over Age look and would like to be featured, please leave a comment below!

Nina,
I can’t wait to read everyone’s posts today on breaking the fashion rules!
I agree that we should wear what we feel comfortable wearing at any age!

I just can’t stand those “what not to wear” posts. I wish they would end. They are so demeaning and offensive. Thanks for standing up against it!
I totally agree with you, Nina! It is our job to decide what to wear! Thank you very much for this post. You always look amazing!

Well, I guess I break all of the “rules” too! I did a post last year on wearing a romper, stying a crop top, and enjoy wearing shorts and bikinis. Why not? i do think it just comes down to being comfortable in your own skin with whatever you wear, no matter age. Love that tube top with the white skirt, so pretty on you! Ill pop by to read their stories.
Have a great weekend Nina!

Nina, I love this post! Rules are for fools! Ha. I just made that up and I like it. It’s catchy! All of you amazing ladies rock your own chic style that suits you. I stopped wearing my knee high and over the knee socks with shorts and short dresses when I was in my late 30’s because someone told me I looked ridiculous. Then in my 40’s, I was like “to hell with that, I will wear what makes me feel great”…so now my short shorts and tall socks are back in action right along with my pigtails…at 44 years old…and I recently was hit on at a bar by a 23 year old! He told me I was “cute as hell” and said he wanted to kiss me! So how’s that for an ego boost! (Oh, how I am laughing at loud after I just typed that). Have a wonderful weekend, my beautiful friend!

I’ve pretty grown in that department if I may say so. I definitely wear what I want, what makes me feel good! No one else!
Rules were meant to be broken! I love wearing white all year, and wearing leopard (which, as a woman over 40, is supposedly a “don’t”)!

Thanks Nina for featuring us all and for organising us. You are an inspiration my friend and also kind, encouraging and supportive. In other words ‘You rock girlfriend’
I’ve always considered myself a ruler follower, but not when it comes to that absurd list…LOL!
I love your style Nina! Why shouldn’t we continue to try new fashion trends and decide for ourselves what works and looks good! We set out own rules!!
