Even though I love my classic wardrobe, I know that without seasonal updates, it doesn’t take long for a look to feel outdated—or worse—frumpy. That’s why, each season, I dive into the latest trends, carefully selecting a few pieces to refresh my wardrobe while staying true to my signature style. I think it is important for us to curate our wardrobes to fit our own personal style. Rather than purchasing a whole new wardrobe, I look for a few versatile pieces so I can make many different outfits from the things I buy each season. While I focus on timeless pieces, I do like to throw in a wild card every so often.
This fall, we’re seeing a beautiful mix of timeless classics alongside fresh influences. Western-inspired elements, Chanel-style “lady jackets,” and a renewed focus on denim are just a few of the key trends. I’m particularly excited about the comeback of flared and wide-leg jeans, which offer a flattering break from the years of skinny and ultra-low-rise styles. The current sweet spot—a mid to slightly high rise—is a win for most body types and is a much-needed update that’s both stylish and comfortable.
Here’s a peek into my process for curating a seasonal wardrobe update:
Step 1: Scoping Out the Trends
I start by reviewing the overarching themes for the season. For fall 2024, it’s all about balancing modern classics with a few playful touches. Chanel-inspired jackets lend a polished edge to any look, while western boots and belts add just the right amount of rugged charm. The trench coat and oversized blazer still have a place in a fall capsule wardrobe, and we are still seeing lots of neutral colors this fall season.
Denim is another highlight, with a shift toward more relaxed fits. The wide-leg and flared styles this season offer a refreshing change. Pair these with tailored blouses or sleek waistcoats for an effortlessly chic look that feels modern yet classic. The denim jacket has gotten a makeover, we are seeing lady jacket styles, as well as blazer details. The denim shirt is another of this season’s key pieces which goes along with the western theme Ralph Lauren has been bringing forward for the last couple of years. If you purchase nothing else, adding a new pair of jeans will go a long way toward updating your wardrobe, especially since we wear jeans so often these days. Plus there are a bunch of different styles that are super flattering, and can go from office casual to date night with nothing more than switching a white t-shirt to a lady-like off-shoulder top.
Step 2: Color Stories and Patterns
After noting the key themes, I dive into the season’s color palette and patterns. Here’s what’s standing out:
Color Story: Khaki**
This season, khaki green is taking the lead, though a range of khaki shades is also in play. The best part? This earthy tone pairs beautifully with caramel brown, a staple from past seasons. If you’ve got boots, belts, or handbags in this warm hue, they’ll seamlessly transition into your fall looks. luckily, the color works beautifully with our classic style, and if you are a lover of this color or “cherry cola” it is the perfect time to lean in and purchase this color. I would invest in outerwear such as a bomber jacket or a midi skirt if you aren’t a huge fan, but if are, you will find several pieces in this shade.

Color Story: Cherry Cola/Burgundy**
Think deep, rich shades of red-brown and burgundy. These colors are incredibly versatile, often already present in classic wardrobes, and they pair effortlessly with blues and even soft lavenders.

Pattern: Leopard is Back!**
Leopard print made a splash when I first started blogging in 2016, and it’s making a triumphant return. From accessories to slip dresses, A-line skirts, blouses, and even pants, leopard is a fun yet chic way to add some flair to your outfits. Don’t forget to check your closet first—you may already have pieces to bring this trend to life. The best part is that the leopard works beautifully with a neutral color palette, and it is a quintessential classic piece.

Step 3: Accessorizing and Silhouettes
Accessories and silhouettes are the finishing touches that elevate any wardrobe.
Shoes & Accessories**
This fall, ballet flats, slingback kitten heels, and knee-high boots with lower heels are front and center. Jewelry is leaning toward more substantial, statement-making pieces—think chunky gold hoops that channel a blend of 1970s and 1990s vibes.
Silhouettes**
One of my favorite trends is the waistcoat, available in short and long versions. It pairs perfectly with wide-leg pants and offers a polished, sophisticated look. Tops this season are more fitted, with off-shoulder and asymmetrical styles taking the spotlight—ideal for pairing with that wider leg pant and a pair of slingback heels. Another great way to style a waistcoat is over a tank top paired with a maxi skirt. This simple outfit is perfect for casual outings.
Step 4: Filling in the Gaps
Once I’ve got a sense of the season’s trends, I go through my wardrobe to see what I can pull together from my existing pieces. I style a few outfits inspired by Instagram, Pinterest, and my favorite fashion magazines. Then, I identify any “gaps”—those missing pieces or colors that can help tie my wardrobe together and keep my look current. These are the items I keep an eye out for when shopping.

My Fall Wishlist and Style Notes
Here are a few of the looks, colors, and patterns I’m excited about this season:
– Khaki greens paired with caramel brown. I already have a pair of caramel suede boots that will be perfect with a khaki green skirt.
– Rich burgundy tones: I already have my eye out for a burgundy sweater, which will pair beautifully with a blazer I already own
– Leopard print accessories and statement pieces: I am feeling the leopard and am looking for a pair of leopard slingback shoes and an A-line dress–both are timeless staples. Once I find the perfect skirt, I think it will pair beautifully with a white shirt and a leather jacket for a casual day
– Chunky gold jewelry I was lucky enough to purchase two pairs of chunky gold earrings in the 1990s. They are a staple item and I love the classic look. If you don’t have a pair already, chunky earrings are a great choice.
– Wide Leg Pants: I would ditch skinny jeans asap and add a pair of wide-leg pants or jeans to my wardrobe asap.
These fall trends feel like the perfect complement to my classic wardrobe, offering just the right mix of modern flair and timeless style. I know I will be wearing these looks for a long time, and can’t wait to add them to my own personal capsule wardrobe. I’d love to hear what’s catching your eye this season! Let me know which trends you’re excited to incorporate into your wardrobe.
